Phillip made and sold wooden props to the coal mines and did other carpentry work.

Some time in the late 1920's Phillip and Pearl had a falling out and Phillip went back to northern Indiana where most of his brothers still lived. Phillip died in South Bend, Indiana March 14, 1939. He is buried in the Oakridge Cemetery in Catlin.

Phillip's grandfather Johannes Michael Schutz is buried in Songer Cemetery with a headstone engraved "Michael Sheets."
