Ruby Edith Schutz, born July 27, 1900, was the second child and eldest daughter of Phillip and Pearl Schutz. She soon learned to help with chores like bread baking and keeping the kitchen fires going and outside work like gathering eggs, weeding corn and sawing wood.

She grew up near many cousins in the Catlin area and as a youth had a lot of pictures made on outings with her cousins and friends. She dated John Alcorn and her sister Frieda dated John's cousin Glenn Alcorn.

After both couples married they took a honeymoon together at Niagara Falls in 1927. Ruby and John bought a house at 1626 King street in Danville. Frieda and Glenn bought a house a few blocks away on B St
